Mrs. Stewart on Pajama Day
|
Susan Stewart
First Grade teacher Susan Stewart went to school with the same students from kindergarten to 12th grade in Chester, Texas. Their whole school (K-12) was smaller than our Primary campus today. Mrs. Stewart's favorite memories are of her Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. David. She remembers nap time when they would rest while the teacher played John Denver records and the cookies and orange juice after they woke up.
Mrs. Stewart gave the following account when asked why she wanted to be a teacher: "I always wanted to be a teacher. My parents were teachers and I guess I thought that was the only job on earth. I loved every part of their job. I wanted to decorate their classrooms and grade papers. I watched them type their tests at the kitchen table. It never looked like work to me. It just looked like fun! My dad drove a bus and coached baseball. In my eyes, he was the greatest man with the greatest job. He is still my hero.
I can remember sitting in class, as young as third grade, critiquing my teacher. I would sit and think of better ways to explain and teach the lesson. I would even tell my friends that I could tell they were confused but, I would explain everything later. I sure wish I had those teachers with me now. I certainly don't know as much as I thought I did."
When asked about a funny time in her classroom, Mrs. Stewart told about a student arriving at school and saying, "Mrs. Stewart, I won't be here tomorrow. I have to have my lungs taken out." Naturally she was puzzled. "Lungs?" asked Mrs. Stewart. "Wanna see?", asked the student. Of course she wanted to see! He opened his mouth so she could see his TONSILS!!
